Sunday 14th September:
stage 9: Vielha (Val dčAran) - Port dčEnvalira (Andorra) 176kms.
Third Pyrénéean stage, and for the first time in the Vuelta 2003 the altitudes will exceed 2000 meters. After crossing Andorra, the tour will attack the formidable Port D'Envalira--an historical first--to finish at 2,410 meters after a 28 km long "hors category" climb, still in Andorra.

2 à 3 kms avant l'arrivée Delolmo de la Kelme, chute avec aitor Gonzalez dans les barrières de bord de route.
Aitor Gonzalez, tombé juste avant à 2, 500kms de l'arrivée est revenu sur le groupe de tête qui comprend les favoris et attaque dans la foulée, ici à droite de la route.

Aitor Gonzalez, Rasmussen dans la roue. Il est repris, le groupe se reforme.


Valverde remporte l'étape devant Frigo et le groupe des favoris étiré qui suit à 50m.
Frigo qui aime ce type d'arrivée passe 2ème avec un net écart sur le groupe des favoris. Il est devancé par la fuséée Valverde.
Valverde signe ici une de ses plus belles victoires, même si l'étape a un peu déçu.
Valverde, a attaqué tout au long du dernier col. Il est récompensé par le gain de l'étape

Weather:

Sunny skies predicted throughout course, except for cumulus coulds in high altitudes.

Light wind from north-northeast, becoming headwind in latter stages of course.

Temperatures 20 degrees C in valleys, as low as 4 degrees C in highest mountain passes.

Three riders attained the summit in lead:

Lookiing forward to last ascent of 28km reaching 9° gradient and reaching 2,410 M.

Three riders pass into lead in 1st mountain, the Pueto de la Bonaigua, a 1st category climb:

1-Gonzalez

2-Ferrio

3-Noval.

A group of around 10 riders pursues single escapee.

The racers attack the second major climb of the day, the 2nd category Puerto del Canto (1,730 M).

In Puerto del Canto, Virenque falls far back, accompanied by Zuelle.

60km remaining, peloton in descent.

Horrach & Julich escape peloton, but are overtaken.

Peloton at 3" from lead group.

Belli & Jekere join lead group.

Rodriguez drops back from lead group.

Alex Zuelle abandons, bringing total to 20 after 1 week.

Gorka Gonzalez alone in front; group of 7 hold 1' 30" lead on peloton. Entering "faux plats", climbing toward Andorra la Vella.

Tour passes into Andorra. Interminable climb to finish.

Expected that the pure climbers will attack the "rouleurs" in the last ascent; a move awaited from Heras.

Labarca tem leading peloton; 1'11" deficit on G. Gonzalez. Peloton overtakes one escapee, leaving 5.

Only G.Gonalez left in front of peloton.

From La Vella, the really steep climb begins.

Now 20" advance for Gonzalez; then he'sovertaken.

Leipheimer relays, leading teamate Rasmussen in front of peloton.

20km from finish; peloton breaking up.

Tentative attacks, then Van Goolen leaves peloton, followed by Peipoli.

Counterattack mounted by Santos Gonzalez, joined by Montgomery , Scarponi & Guttierez.

Cardenas, U. Osa in his wheel, attack. Peipoli & Van Goolen 15km from finish.

52" between lead & peloton, Cardenas 31" back.

Laiseka & Guttierez attack from behind.

Valverde lauches attack, catches Laiseka, & both leave Guttierez.

Cardenas, Laiseka, Valverde & U. Osa regroup for counterattack.

Group of 4 now 41" down from lead 2, and 29" ahead of peloton.

10 km point reached.

Heras, Perez, Rasmuszen & Nozal leave peloton behind.

Now group of 9 formed in front, joined by Scarponi.

A; Gonzalez launching attacks, Galdeano well back in peloton.

Cardenas, Osa & Valverde catch front 2.

At 6km mark, 5 in lead with 19" on pursuers; Heras rejoins peloton.

Unai Osa attacks, Van Goolen drops back.

Beltran & Galdeano distanced, Nozal holding good position.

Rasmussen attacks.In last kilometers, Aitor Gonzalez crashes. Like Armstrong in Tour de France, surge of adrenalin helps him recover position.

New formation in lead group.

Valverde, Rasmussen & Frigo in lead, 1km from finish. Summit in view, Heras doesn't attack.

Frigo in position to win going into last 400 meters, but Valverde surges past for the victory.

Heras est arrivé nettement décroché à 7 secondes de Nozal.
on a sans doute l'explication quant à sa non attaque !
Heras n'a t-il pas perdu le Tour d'espagne dans cette étape, ou pense t-til a la Sierra Nevada et de la Pandera ainsi qu'au contre la montre en côte de la dernière étape ?, on ne voit pas comment il pourrait faire autrement désormais.
Glez de Galdeano est lui aussi décroché du groupe de tête
