point for the intermediary sprint is hotly disputed by Zabel

Piepoli
leaves peloton in pursuit of Valverde, who has now broken away.
In the
back of the peloton, Beltran comes back strongly with Blanco.
Valverde,
Piepoli & del Olmo catch up with pursuit group.
Group has 43" advance on peloton.
Lobato has a 40" lead on the pursuit group.
Heras still
has not made a move, staying in peloton controlled by Once.
At 10km
from finish Lobato has 15" lead on group & 55"
on peloton.
Lobato
retaken, gap stabilized between group & peloton, which is
now headed by Beltran.
As Lobato
falls back, Cardenas shuns relay with Kelme teamates Sevilla
& Valverde.
At 9km
from finish gap is 1 minute, Valverde in front.
Lead fluctuating;
now Atienza in front.
Beltran
accelerates in front of peloton, worried about his 4th place
position which is threatened by Valverde.Soon he pays a price
for his efforts.
In front,
Mercado accelerates all alone.
With 6km
remaining, Heras leaves pelooton, followed by Rasmussen &
U. Osa. In a few hundred meters there's already a 22" gap
on Nozal & peloton.
Galdeano
is in second small peloton.
Hereas
gaining time on Sevilla & group; Mercado stays in lead.
Mercado
approaches final sprint, with Cardenas hard on his heels.
Mercado
taken with 500 meters remaining; Cardenas passes finish line
150 meters in front to win, Sevilla takes 3rd.
Heras finishes
54" up on Nozal; Valverde finishes strong to move up to
4th overall in front of Beltran.
Sevilla,
after a poor start on the tour, moves up to 13th overall.
